Oakham School is looking to appoint an outstanding and well-qualified RYA Instructor to a full-time post leading sailing, with effect from 23 August 2021. With a long-standing national and international reputation for excellence in school sailing, Oakham enjoys unrivalled access to Rutland Water, one of the finest inland sailing venues in the UK. The school consequently seeks applications from RYA Instructors and Coaches of the highest calibre to lead the development of sailing at Oakham into the next stage of its evolution. 

It is expected that the appointee will teach dinghy and team sailing to pupils from Year 6 through to Year 13. Responsibilities will include leading sailing at Oakham, providing instruction to the pupils up to 6 days per week throughout the academic year, leading the coaching of pupils ranging from beginners to students in our elite fleet and team racing squads.

A key element of the role is also to develop the school’s Adventurous Learning programme and to encourage participation in these areas of school life. The holder of this post will need to work closely with relevant teachers and other staff and will also play a key role within the Duke of Edinburgh Award provision at the school. He/she will provide the leadership for adventurous learning across the school, organising adventurous activities and expeditions. They will also be a key person within the school for pupils to gain experience of outdoor pursuits and develop skills and passions in this direction. Support and training in the area will be provided.


The successful applicant will also be expected to be competent in boat maintenance and care and preferably have several of the following: RYA Instructor, a Race Coaching qualification, and Powerboat Instructor qualifications and Day Skipper or higher.

Closing date for applications is 9am on 19 July 2021, with interviews on 21 or 22 July 2021.
