Description

At Blue Box Experiences, we are all about getting people out on the water. We have a very varied fleet of three boats and working across all three is part of the fun (or should we say challenge) of working here.  We are incredibly proud of the relationship we have with our customers and the reviews and feedback they leave on their experiences make all the hard work we put into our trips worthwhile.  They are the most important people in our business and the most important thing here is that they love the experiences we deliver, as ultimately, they pay our wages and mean we get to work on some of the most amazing boats in the Solent.

We believe there are three key factors that make our experiences great - the boats we offer them on, what we do on the experiences and the staff that run them!  Most of our customers can remember the name of the Skipper they sailed with 9 years ago but they might well have forgotten the name of the boat.  So we know getting the right staff to run our experiences is as important as getting the right boats.  If you think that you can deliver amazing customer service day-in, day-out on great boats and turn your hand to whatever role you’re needed in then read on, however if you are looking for a job that’s easy, with 9-5 Monday to Friday hours and where the only time you’ll get wet is walking to your car then ultimately you’re probably in the wrong place!

What you’ll be doing?

The list is too extensive to possibly include it all here, but listed below are some of the more common tasks that the role will entail.

  • Delivering sailing experiences as First Mate aboard Valerie, our 1895 Victorian Gaff Yawl

  • Looking after customers aboard Betsie Jane, our 1938 Gentleman’s Launch, possibly in the role of host/ess or driving the boat depending on your experience

  • Delivering sailing experiences as First Mate aboard Mermerus, our Clipper 60 Ocean Race Yacht

  • Maintaining all three boats

  • Working in our shoreside coffee shop - probably not much, but everyone takes a turn.  If the phone rings when you’re there you might even have to answer some customer queries too!

  • Helping out in our kitchen getting the catering ready for the sailing and riverboat experiences

If you come with some amazing existing skills from varnishing, to coffee making to cake baking we will adapt your roles and responsibilities to play to your strengths.  But the key thing here is that we are team and we all muck in to ensure that everything gets done and everything gets done well!

What you get from us:

In return for everything you can bring, we can offer you an exciting, challenging role working as part of a small, close-knit team where you will be really valued.   Working across such a wide range of boats you will learn lots of new skills as well as covering around 1,500nm sailing in the Solent.

Unlike a lot of sailing jobs you will get to go home every night and although it’s not quite 9am to 5pm,the hours are pretty civilised and most days we work 8am to 5pm with the odd trip requiring the hours to vary a bit.   Working 5 days each week the nature of the position does mean that it will include most weekends with two midweek days off.  These days vary each week and you’ll be given a roster a few weeks in advance letting you know what you’ll be doing and the days you’re off.

The salary for the position depends on previous experience and what responsibilities you can take on, but will be somewhere between £1200 - £1500 per month.  There’s also 28 days paid holiday per annum which will be pro-rataed for the duration of your contact.  The position will initially be offered fixed term to 31 October  2018, with a negotiable start date no later than 1 March 2018.  Longer term employment may be offered at the end of the initial contract period.

Requirements

What you’ll need?

  • Experience of working in a small team and being self reliant
